Looks great, even though I am in Dallas and log in to an onramp in Macedonia through a VPN. Thanks for the effort!

Make sure you visit the Railhead Smokehouse for BBQ. A short UBER or LYFT ride away. WELL worth it. Joe T Garcias' Tex Mex is one of the more famous Tex Mex restaurants inn Ft. Worth. It is well above average.

Ft Worth has a good Subway restaurant there, and a couple of vending machines. Nothing else within a 3 block walk. I got food from Subway for a couple of years when I was commuting from FTW to AUS. You could conceivably use their website and order for pickup if it looks like time will be tight...

We were scheduled to ride DAL-CHI and CHI-DAL on 15 May and 19 May. I don't spend that kind of money to ride a bus. So we moved our trip to June 19-23. Managed to snag bedrooms, albeit they are Bedroom A. And of all things, the fare was $135 less. AMTRAK Guest rewards had no issues making the...

How did you get breakfast? I rode SAS-FTW on 9 April. No breakfast, no coffee in the sleeper until an hour after departure. What they have done to the Eagle is a disgrace.

Family BR is our favorite! You will likely not be allowed to sit or eat in the snack bar. Depends on the FSA. Sometimes it closes while the FSA slings the FLEX at mealtimes. YMMV. Attendant has always subbed a hot dog (sometimes 2) or pizza for the FLEX garbage. At least you can sit at the...

Could you expand on this? Eagle has been stopping at Texarkana for years. By "station is now open", what do you mean?

If you are going to spend the night in Austin, I recommend using a hotel shuttle or LYFT/UBER from the AMTRAK station. The area around there can be dicey after dark. When I was commuting on the Eagle, the Holiday Inn On The Lake shuttle worked well. As I noted elsewhere, food service on the...

On the Southbound Eagle 421, sleepers connect to the Westbound Sunset, so there is no need to detrain. ISTR one coach may connect as well, but I may be in error here. On the Sunset Eastbound, there is a sleeper (and I think) a coach which connects similarly to the Northbound Eagle.

I connected from the WB Sunset to the Eagle on 9 April, 2024. We arrove on #1 from New Orleans more or less on time, the station was fairly crowded, although there were a few seats inside and outside in the (for the nonce) pleasant weather. The station itself is in fairly nice condition, I...

How is the overnight accommodation in the San Antonio station? I'm coming from New Orleans on the Sunset, and then out on the Eaglet Tuesday AM. Guess I can stash my bags in the station and hang out at Denny's? Or are you locked out of the station until shortly before train time?

    Coast Starlight discussion 2023 Q4 - 2024

IIRC, there were a couple of these on the Eagle. At one time this was the smoking lounge. I've never seen this in use. Would be a nice place to serve drinks and relieve some of the congestion in the snack bar. Always saw it advertised as "Family Bedroom". Economy, it ain't, although sometimes...

    Amtrak Metropolitan Lounges

Here's the cart: https://www.academy.com/p/academy-sports-outdoors-folding-sports-wagon-with-removable-bed Our news crews used them at the TV station. I repaired them once in a while, usually just a wheel bent, but considering they were used daily I had no real issue. I like the folding feature...

    Crescent discussion 2023 Q4 - 2024

I am planning a MIA-NYP, NYP-NOL-SAS-DAL trip the first part of April. I have to fly DFW-MIA, but one must make sacrifices now and then. Can one specify a VL II sleeper, or is it just the luck of the draw? How is the Crescent nowadays? VL I or II? What's the normal consist? And the number 1...

We've not had any issue in Chicago. We use one of those foldable 4 wheel carts for our luggage. I sometimes take my transfer chair, it all fits in the cart (You can get them from Academy Sports). We use a luggage cable with a padlock, and secure it to the shelf, but there's plenty of slack to...

First long trip on Amtrak (SAS to VAC)

Howdy from Coppell! The food on the Sunset is good AMTRAK Diner food. But expensive if you are in Coach. Take a look at AMAZON, they have some neat soft electric cooler bags. You can leave it plugged in at your seat for snax and stuff. Look for blowup lumbar and other type pillows. Easier for...

    Riding Amtrak for fun?

See if she would like to share a BR or even the Family BR. Bring a jug, some snacks, a Kindle or a couple of books. The Family BR gives you each a window, plenty of room, and can be less expensive than a standard BR. My daughter has a high pressure job at a local chain grocery store, night...

Texas Eagle Chicago to San Antonio in August 2023

The other reply does send you to juckins.net, an excellent place to find timetables in pdf format due to the hard work of a nice young man, In short, remember that the Sunset leaves for LAX in the wee hours of the morning. So if you are riding from, say Dallas, you leave on a Wednesday, Saturday...
