History of the creation of Railpax which became Amtrak

In 1976 I wrote a report on a PDX <> PSC section of the Empire Builder for ODOT and submitted it to Amtrak. I left ODOT in December of that year and so did not follow it up. I did keep a copy of it and by coincidence later on I met an Amtrak planner who was interested in the idea, so I sent...

History of the creation of Railpax which became Amtrak

At around that time I was riding the French Train Militaire between Berlin and Strasbourg, but my dad picked up the May 1, 1971 timetable for me. As you can see when it is blown up, the SP thought it was still doing things its way with nitpicky special charges.

The only solution is to ride both routes. Columbia from Train 28 on a cloudy day.

History of the creation of Railpax which became Amtrak

I almost laughed out loud when I saw the familiar map -- with the Pacific Northwest chopped off. Author Stewart Holbrook used to call it the Far Corner. Part of my work for ODOT in 1971-76 turned out to be explaining geography to people in The Nation's Capital. Aside from omitting what became...

History of the creation of Railpax which became Amtrak

Some more background on the interaction with the post office. A handful of mail by rail operations continued between the 1967 postal bloodbath and the 1971 launch of Amtrak. One of them was the former SP&S connection for the Mainstreeter and Western Star. Had the start-up of Amtrak been...

History of the creation of Railpax which became Amtrak

Thanx for posting. I missed all this by being stationed in Berlin, relying on clippings mailed by my family. I came home in September 1971 and started at ODOT in October. It took me a while to figure out what happened. Or, at least to piece together an outline of what had happened! The...

St. Paul, Milwaukee, Chicago (TCMC) second daily service

Perhaps the short notice start-up did not leave time enough to work food deals with regional firms.

Ground Transport in the Pacific Northwest

If it's just for a study, it can be done by plowing through the internet with dummy itinerary searches. It's slow, because some trips are less than daily. For the reports here, I just show PDX<>SPK as a sample of what is going on east-west. You're right about east-west service being skimpy...

Ground Transport in the Pacific Northwest

I checked and Wanderu is not showing the night bus run by Northwestern, only the daylight trip which is listed as Amtrak Thruway service. The night bus does show in the Flix/Greyhound reservation system. In the process of checking this, I discovered that Amtrak was showing the daylight bus for...

For many, many years, UP457 carried the Oakland sleepers from Portland to Seattle and NP408 brought them back. That service ended in late 1965 or early 1966. There was a pool of sleepers painted in SP colors, but lettered for Southern Pacific, Union Pacific, and Northern Pacific. The two...

These are private bus companies, not transit agencies. Seattle to Spokane is run by Flixbus and Northwestern Stages. Flix feeds their info to Google, but the only Northwestern info comes via Amtrak Thruway. So, the night Seattle <> Spokane bus does not show in Google.

I am on their e-mail list since 2022 and the only weather-related disruptions that they've sent out notices on was flooding around the docks caused by the excessive rain when an atmospheric river dumped on California. That was with the San Francisco Bay Ferries. Larkspur and Sausalito are...

The upstairs bar has been used by the volunteer guides. If it wasn't there, I'm sure that they could work something out. It's been a surprise that it is not used for a second attendant on the Winter Park Express. A lot of sales are missed due to the line downstairs.

Ground Transport in the Pacific Northwest

Thanx! Something that All Aboard Washington ought to do is to get the night Tacoma/Seattle <> Spokane bus run by Northwestern into the Amtrak Thruway system. It's already doing every darn thing needed, except for the paperwork. (Evergreen's daylight bus via Wenatchee is in the Thruway...

    Colorado planning

That may have played a part, but local bus service was the main issue. The creation of RTD did include Weld County, and that's how Greeley ended up with a local bus system. The antis wanted out of the new district, but there were people in Greeley-Evans who wanted local bus service, so a...
